The Divorce Clarity Series: Why You Should Start With a Divorce Coach Before Calling an Attorney
By Nanette Murphy, Certified Divorce & Life Reinvention Coach
Divorce rarely begins in a courtroom.
It begins quietly — in the middle of the night, in the shower, in the moment you realize something in your marriage can no longer be ignored.
Today, I’m launching a new weekly blog series called The Divorce Clarity Series — a space where I will guide women through every stage of divorce: preparing, deciding, navigating the process, healing, rebuilding, and ultimately thriving in their second act.
Because divorce is not just a legal process.
It is an emotional, financial, and identity transformation.
And where you begin matters more than most people realize.
When I faced my own grey divorce after a 25-year marriage, I did what most women do.
I called an attorney.
I believed that legal advice was the only path forward.
If I just found the right lawyer, everything would fall into place.
What I didn’t know then — and what no one told me — was how costly that decision would become emotionally, financially, and personally.
There was no roadmap.
No emotional support.
No clarity.
And I paid for that — twice.
The Problem Most Women Face at the Beginning
When divorce becomes inevitable, women are often:
Overwhelmed
Emotionally flooded
Afraid of making the wrong decision
Desperate for answers
In that state, we rush.
We hire an attorney before we understand:
What we truly want
What we actually need
What options exist
How our emotions are shaping our decisions
Legal advice is essential.
But legal advice is not where clarity begins.
What Most People Do Wrong
Most women:
Let fear drive their choices
Make permanent decisions from temporary emotions
Enter the legal process without emotional or strategic preparation
Allow conflict to escalate unnecessarily
Attorneys are trained to handle legal conflict.
They are not trained to help you process grief, regulate fear, or rebuild identity.
That is where a divorce coach belongs — at the very beginning.
How Starting With a Divorce Coach Changes Everything
A certified divorce coach helps you:
Slow the process down
Clear emotional fog
Clarify your values and non-negotiables
Prepare emotionally and financially
Avoid costly mistakes
Build the right professional team
When women begin with clarity:
They make better legal decisions
They protect their children more effectively
They reduce conflict
They heal faster
They build stronger futures
Where you begin determines where you end.
Why I Created This Series
In the coming weeks, through The Divorce Clarity Series, I will be writing about:
Emotional readiness before divorce
Self-care during the process
Supporting children of all ages
Rebuilding confidence
Healing after divorce
Finding purpose
Dating and loving again
My mission is simple:
To help women begin this journey with clarity — not crisis.
Because I know firsthand what happens when you don’t.
A Final Thought
If you are at the very beginning of this journey, please hear this:
You do not have to rush.
You do not have to decide everything today.
And you do not have to do this alone.
Clarity is not a luxury in divorce.
It is a necessity.
If you’re just beginning to ask the hard questions, I invite you to start with clarity.
